懷冰先生者，薛公之客也。抱朴子常諮焉。先生曰：『余以朝陽之歲，希聖之年，遭世罔象，玄黃失位。故權棲蓬蓽，眄盱囂塵之表；高蹈獨往，邈然不返。』

Master Embracing-Ice was a retainer of Lord Xue.The Master Who Embraces Simplicity (Baopuzi, Ge Hong's persona) often consulted him.

The Master said: 'In the years of my morning sun, in the season when I aspired to sagehood, I encountered an age of formlessness, when heaven (the dark) and earth (the yellow) had lost their proper positions.

Therefore I provisionally lodged in a thatched hut of brambles, casting my gaze beyond the dust and clamor;I strode high and went my own way, going far and not returning.'

This opening sets the Waipian's keynote: reclusion (dun 遯) as a *political* act, not mere withdrawal.

Qing Xitai (中國道教史 1:412) reads this as Ge Hong's apologia for his own retreat to Mount Luofu after the collapse of the Western Jin.

The 'morning sun years' alludes to the *Yijing* hexagram Sheng 升 — youthful ascent thwarted by cosmic disorder.Compare Ware's framing of the Inner Chapters preface: there Ge Hong defends *xian* (immortality);

here he defends the prior step of moral disengagement.
