抱朴子曰：『五穀必先稼穡，而後可得而食也；勳烈必先積累，而後可得而享也。學者所以飾誠養正，導性洗濁，刮垢磨光，激濁揚清者也。故玉經琢而成器，士由學而入道。』

Baopuzi said: 'The five grains must first be sown and reaped before they can be eaten;achievement and merit must first be accumulated before they can be enjoyed.

Learning is that by which one ornaments sincerity and nourishes correctness, guides the nature and washes away the muddy, scrapes off corrosion and polishes brightness, dams the turbid and lifts up the pure.

Thus jade becomes a vessel through carving, and the scholar enters the Dao through learning.'

The closing aphorism 'shi you xue er ru dao' (the scholar enters the Dao through learning) is one of the most-quoted lines from the entire Waipian.

Schipper (*Taoist Body* p.193) cites it as evidence that for Ge Hong, textual scholarship was not opposed to mystical attainment but constituted its propaedeutic.

This stands in instructive contrast to the later Quanzhen position (Wang Chongyang) that book-learning *obstructs* the Way.

The agricultural metaphor (wugu 五穀) also links learning to the body — grains being the substrate of *jing* (vital essence) in early Daoist physiology.
