人臣之忠也，匪躬之勞，匡上之失，正君之過。盡規竭忠，匪躬而已。其立身也直，其臨事也斷，其見利也讓，其當難也勇。內不阿親戚之邪，外不曲交遊之私。

The loyalty of a minister consists in toiling without regard for self, correcting his superior's failings, rectifying the ruler's faults.

He exhausts his counsel and gives his loyalty to the utmost — and that without thought of self.In establishing himself he is upright;in facing affairs he is decisive;in seeing profit he yields;

in facing danger he is brave.Inwardly he does not pander to the deviance of kin and intimates;outwardly he does not twist himself for the private interests of friends and associates.

Sailey (1978: 245) notes that Ge Hong's portrait of the ideal minister is sharper-edged than the typical Han ideal: the minister must *correct the ruler's faults*, not merely serve.

This is a Latter Han remonstrance-tradition (e.g., Ma Rong, Zheng Xuan) inflected by the political bitterness of Western Jin collapse.

The fourfold rhythm (zhi 直, duan 斷, rang 讓, yong 勇 — upright, decisive, yielding, brave) is a deliberate echo of the four cardinal virtues of the *Zhongyong*.

For the Daoist reader, the chapter is significant in showing that Ge Hong did *not* see Daoist cultivation as license for political quietism.
