夫聰明大智,誠難得而貴也。聞善若驚,疾惡如仇。觀千劍而後識器,操千曲而後曉聲。故圓行方止,乘理而動者,君子之道也;矜功伐能,憑勢以陵物者,小人之行也。

Truly, brilliant intelligence and great wisdom are hard to attain and precious.[The wise man] hears of the good as if startled by it, and hates evil as a personal enemy.
Only after viewing a thousand swords does one recognize a [good] blade;only after handling a thousand melodies does one understand sound.
Therefore to move in circles and rest in squares, to act in accordance with principle — this is the Way of the gentleman.
To boast of accomplishments and parade abilities, to ride upon authority in order to oppress others — this is the conduct of the petty man.
